Nigerian Defender Dies During Friendly Match In Malaysia
David Faramola Oniya was said to have suffered a heart attack which led to him collapsing during a friendly match in Malaysia.
The Nigerian defender David Faramola Oniya has died after he collapsed during a friendly match on Saturday June 13 in Malaysia.
The 30-year-old defender was playing in a friendly between his Malaysian club T-Team and Kelantan when he collapsed just three minutes into the game.
He was taken to the hospital were he was certified dead.
The friendly was called off after 60 minutes after the hospital confirmed his death.
T-Team club’s chief executive Syahrizan Mohd Zain has blamed slow response from the medical team for the death of the Nigerian defender.
“He suffered a heart attack but it could have been a different story” he told the New Straits Times.
“Our defender was deprived of oxygen for several minutes.”
Oniya had only just joined the Malaysian club this season after spells in Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.
